María is the daughter of Salvadoran immigrants and a San Francisco native. In 1997 she joined the Second Chance Tattoo Removal Clinic as a client and later became a case manager for the clinic. Maria started her grassroots community work at the age of 13 years-old, joining the fight against Prop 187 and has continued to be involved with progressive agencies throughout the Bay Area. She is a proud member of Danza Azteca Xitlalli and a co-founder of the Justice 4 Alex Nieto Coalition. In 2008, Maria represented CARECEN SF in the formation of San Francisco’s Rapid Response Network. A coalition of 21 agencies that alerts the immigrant community regarding ICE activity and focuses on providing legal assistance for those detained. Maria is currently working on becoming an accredited representative before the Board of Immigration Appeals and has been a Notary Public at CARECEN SF since 2008.
