Voting rights for new citizens expanded
A new law in California will allow people who become citizens after the voter registration deadline to register and vote up until the close of the polls on election day. Previously, new citizens could vote only if they registered at least seven days before elections.
A measure of justice
The Obama administration announced that it will review the cases of some 300,000 immigrants facing deportation, allowing those who have no criminal records and do not pose a threat to national security to stay in this country and receive work permits. The government will seek deportation only for those convicted of serious crimes or facing serious criminal charges. Note that immigrants’ whose cases are dismissed and who are issued a work permit will not be placed on a pathway to legal permanent residency.
